The Persecution of the Smoker.

I am a smoker. At one time, this was not such a big deal. As long as I showed a degree of respect toward non-smokers, i.e. not exhaling over them in pubs or cafes, then everyone was happy.

In the past couple of years things have dramatically changed for the worse. Now, smokers have become society’s diseased pariahs. All of the new anti-smoking laws have accomplished this. Smokers must now use ‘designated areas’ everywhere that they go. There is even talk of stopping people from smoking in their own cars when they are driving. To be honest, it has all gone completely over the top.

The social snubbing of smokers actually verges on being a violation of basic human rights. What is happening to our freedom? If someone wants to smoke a cigarette then it is not such a big deal.

All over the country there are more and more pubs closing down as a consequence of the new laws. Surely it would have made more sense to have had proper smoking rooms installed everywhere? Instead of this, people who want to smoke are forced to stand outside in the street. This is not so bad in the summer months, but the winter is a different matter. It is no surprise that so many people are staying at home to drink and smoke in comfort.
